Infertility

Even though infertility affects at least 10% of the population, most couples feel as though they are the only ones struggling through it. Help give some reassurance to those encountering fertility problems by talking about your experience. Did you turn to in vitro fertilization or some other form of infertility treatment? Were alternative or natural fertility treatments useful for you? We want to hear your encouraging anecdotes about infertility and fertility treatments.

There is ALWAYS hope.

Hi All,

Today for the first time i came accross this website & found it very inspiring & also sad at times. So, i have decided to share my story as well in the hope that it gives someone some hope.
My husband and i have been together for 8yrs, married for 6. In March last year (2005) i went off the pill in the hope of conceiving & starting a family. Then in December last year (2005) i had my very first pap smear (at the age of 26) - i was extremely nervous as i had no idea what to expect, but i thought i might as well go and just check that everything is okay with me. (In the back of my mind i guess i knew they would find something wrong as i had a cyst on one of my ovaries when i was only 15 & had to have it removed. When i had that operation, i was told that i might have problems conceiving one day.) Nonetheless, i had a pap smear, a vaginal scan & an oral examination & immediately i was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) & when we got the results back of the pap smear, they picked up what they called an abnormality on my womb. I was also told that i will probably not be able to conceive "normally" as i am infertile, but that there is always hope & that i must not give up & that is what i decided to do. I then had to have a biopsy to test this abnormality on my womb. This was done & after testing this growth, the doctor confirmed that it was not cancerous, but that it had to be removed - this procedure, called a Cone Biopsy, was done under aneasthetic, but afterwards there was some excessive bleeding causing me to drift in and out of conciousness. Anyway, i was treated by my gyneacologist & went home the same day with some pelvic pain & discomfort. 4 Months later i had to have another pap smear to see if this growth was back & thank God it was not. During all this time we were still trying to conceive "normally" but no such luck. I then tried the fertility treatment (Clomid) & the first try did not work. My gynea then decided to have my husband's semen tested to see if the count is high enough and, as fate would have it, his sperm count was low - much too low to even try conceiving "normally". My doctor then advised IUI (Intra-uterine Insemination) & we had this procedure done 2 weeks ago, but there were some more complications as the mouth of the womb was practically closed & my doctor could not get the catheter inside. She then decided to place the washed sperm at the mouth of my womb (in the hope that they would "swim" into my womb). I then had to lie down for about half an hour.

I had a bloodtest done last Friday & there was definitely BETA-HCG (the pregnancy hormone) present in my blood. I had to repeat the bloodtest the Monday & they found a significant increase in the BETA-HCG, but that the progesterone was a bit low. I repeated this bloodtest again today (Wednesday) & found out that i am pregnant!!
That was just proof to me that we are not in control of our lives, but God has all the control.

Bye

Overwhelmed

My husband and I were on our 15 month on Clomid at 250mg daily the last 7 mths. I got upset with my Dr. b/c he would offer no other treatment plan, so we dicided to go to a different doctor. When we saw the new Dr. for the first time he was in disbelief at the mg of Clomid I was taking along with 1500mg of glucophage each month. He stopped me from taking anything for two months and had my husband get tested to make sure he was not the problem and actually his count was low but nothing to worry about. Now, we will do 100mg of Clomid in November and have our first and hopefully only IUI done. We pray that this will work without having to go into deeper procedures. Good Luck to each of you.

Hoping for the best

My husband and I have been married for 3 years and trying to have a baby for 2. My husbad had a vasectomy a few years before we got married so from the beginning I feared that having children would be a challenge. After two reversal surgerys, we have sperm! and lots of it. A year and a half later however, still no baby.
So, the dr's turn to me. After several tests including a biopsy and and hsg everything looks fine, but still no baby. A recent blood test just revealed that My progesterone levels are to low to sustain a pregnancy, so I have started drugs and am hoping that next week I will be able to have an IUI. I am glad that I found this web site and I am glad that I am not the alone in this frustrating process. I wish you all the best. I know that the Dr's will do all they can to help us and the rest is up to a higher power. Here's to all of us, hoping that each day brings us closer to sharing our lives with a little baby.

How agressive is the question.

The question lurking in my mind at this point is how agresive should we get. I know that babies come from a higher place and that the miracle of conception is a huge mistery to ALL of us. When and how souls decide to make the trip back to this reality is only up to them, but I can´t help thinking one of those souls is ready and we are just not preparing fertile ground.
In my case I am a mother of an 11 year old child who came to my life almost efortlessly. I have always wanted a second since then but I went throug a divorce and just settled down after 6 years of living alone with my child. Now I turn around an I´m suddenly 40 years old and married to a wonerful man 8 years younger than me. We want a baby now and ironically I have a 3rd day FSH of 7 but he has a low sperm count with low motility and poor morphology. The first Fertility doctor we went to see recomended to do In Vitro with ICSI but my husband was in shock and wanted a second opinion. Our current doctor put my husband on a treatment of 8 weeks that consisted on Q10, Lysine, antibiotics, antiinflamatories and cough syrup tu help licuefy the semen. After this he says he is better and we are trying IUI. Although I´m happy because he is happy i´m not convienced because his morphology is 3% and I think this alone is enough to try ICSI. Does anyone have expirience in this?
